Out of stock

Sempervivum Colorockz® ‘Coconut Crystal’ is a striking, ultra-hardy succulent admired for its large rosettes and dramatic, season-dependent color shifts. This clumping “hen and chicks” variety transitions from fresh lime green with red accents in cooler seasons to an eye-catching cream and wine-red palette in summer heat. Exceptionally cold-tolerant and easy to grow, it is an excellent choice for rock gardens, containers, and cold-climate succulent displays, offering year-round visual interest with minimal care. Sold in a 2–3-inch plastic nursery pot.

Common Name: Coconut Crystal Hens and Chicks
Botanical Name: Sempervivum Colorockz® ‘Coconut Crystal’

Physical Characteristics

  • Foliage: Large, thick rosette leaves; bicolour throughout the year; lime green with red tones in spring and winter, shifting to cream with deep wine-red centers in summer as heat and light increase

  • Size: 2–6 inches (5–15 cm) tall; 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) wide

  • Flowers: Late spring to summer; reddish-brown to pinkish, star-shaped flowers borne on upright stalks 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) tall

  • Growth Habit: Classic “hen and chicks” form; clumping and spreading via stolons, creating a dense, ground-covering mat; flowering rosettes die after bloom but are replaced by offsets

Plant Care

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade; best coloration develops in bright light

  • Soil: Sandy, gritty, well-drained soil; ideal for rock gardens and succulent mixes

  • Water: Very low water needs; drought-tolerant; water sparingly and allow soil to dry completely between watering

  • Temperature: Extremely cold-hardy; suitable for freezing climates; tolerates temperatures down to at least –20°C (and potentially lower with good drainage)

  • Maintenance: Minimal; remove spent flower stalks and dead rosettes as needed

Perfect For

  • Rock and alpine gardens

  • Cold-climate succulent collections

  • Containers, troughs, and hypertufa planters

  • Ground cover in dry, sunny areas

  • Low-water, low-maintenance landscapes
