Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubrispinus, commonly known as Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus, Arizona Rainbow Cactus, or Ruby Rainbow, is a solitary-growing cylindrical cactus celebrated for its vivid, comb-like spines and showy magenta-pink flowers. This petite yet striking cactus is a favorite for collectors and desert gardens alike.

Common Names: Rainbow Hedgehog Cactus; Arizona Rainbow Cactus; Ruby Rainbow
Botanical Name: Echinocereus rigidissimus var. rubrispinus

Physical Characteristics

  • Stems: Single, stocky, erect column, rarely producing offsets; 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) tall, 3–4 inches (7.5–11 cm) wide

  • Ribs: 15–26 low, flatly tuberculated ribs

  • Spines: Dense, comb-like radial spines; vivid ruby-red or magenta on new growth, fading to lighter pink, yellow, or white while retaining vibrant color

  • Flowers: Large, funnel-shaped magenta-pink to deep rose blooms with white or pale throat; appear near stem tips in late spring to early summer; up to 4 inches (10 cm) diameter (To encourage flowering in E. rigidissimus var. rubrispinus, provide full sun, allow the plant to experience dry winter dormancy, and keep cool but frost-free temperatures during the winter months. Stress from sun and slight drought can enhance flower production and spine coloration.)

  • Fruit: Spiny, circular fruits in green to dark purple, appearing roughly three months after successful pollination

Plant Care

  • Light: Full sun to maintain vibrant spine color and encourage flowering

  • Soil: Well-draining, mineral-rich, non-calcareous soil to prevent root rot

  • Water: Extremely drought-tolerant; water sparingly, allowing soil to dry completely

  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9–11; can tolerate temperatures down to 10°F (-12°C) if kept dry; protect from hard frost

Perfect For

  • Rock gardens, desert landscapes, and xeriscapes

  • Container cultivation in bright, sunny locations

  • Cactus and succulent collections
