Albuca spiralis ‘Frizzle Sizzle’ is a unique, bulb-forming succulent from South Africa, prized for its playful, corkscrew-shaped leaves that twist into tight green spirals. This whimsical plant is a true conversation piece and a favorite among collectors. In late winter to spring, it sends up tall flower spikes bearing fragrant, yellow-green, bell-shaped blooms, often described as smelling like vanilla or butter. An unusual winter grower, it rests during summer dormancy, when the foliage naturally dies back.

Plant Care:

  • Light: Full sun to very bright light; strong light keeps leaves tightly curled (1)

  • Temperature: Prefers 60–80°F (16–27°C); hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11

  • Fans of quirky, sculptural foliage

  • Winter-growing plant enthusiasts

  • Unique gift plants and conversation starters

⚠️ Mildly toxic to pets if ingested.

Notes: When this plant sends up flower stalks, it often causes the leaf tips to brown. This is a natural occurrence. If you don’t want this to happen, remove the flower stalks as soon as they start to grow to prevent leaf tip browning.

  1. Grow this variety in very bright sunlight to encourage tighter leaf curling. This is a winter-growing bulb that goes dormant and loses its leaves each summer after blooming. Keep the bulb dry through its summer dormancy, and resume watering as the leaves re-sprout in fall.
